Churchill Cann Churchill Cann
Churchill Cann is a senior Kitja/Mirriuwong man who was born on Texas Downs Station in 1947. This painting is of Arizona – South of Red-butte on Texas Downs and is 76cm x 100cm on paper. I have been fortunate to go hunting with Churchill on his beloved Texas Downs and while we failed to bring home the kangaroo he shot at, it was a great learning experience for me.
Tommy Carroll Tommy Carroll
Tommy Carroll is a much sought after Kitja artist born on Doon Doon Station in 1956. He is the husband of Katie Cox. This work is titled Pelican Hill and signifies a mustering camp on west Doon Doon, WA. It is ochre on canvas and 46x91cm.
Katie Cox Katie Cox
Katie Cox is a Kitja woman born on Texas Downs station in Western Australia in1958. The work here depicts a very prominent point for aboriginal people of the region called Needlepoint and is Ochre on canvas. This landmark is used as a meeting place for different families and is on Springvale Station. It is said that this is the place where a Kitja man dropped his spear during his journey. When he arrived in Woolah country, he was refused entry by the Woolah man, who noticed he did not have his spear. The Woolah man therefore killed him and laid him to rest near the Gibb River Road.
Lorna Fencer Naparulla
Lorna Fencer Napurrula is a Walpiri lady that was born in the Tanami desert in the 1920’s. I have three paintings by this artist and all are bright and vibrant. The smaller work is called ‘caterpillar dreaming’, the medium sized work is called ‘Bush Potato’ and the largest called ‘Bush Cabbage’. Her art is very distinctive and has been entered into the Telstra Aboriginal Art Awards on numerous occasions.
James Iyuna James Iyuna Item not for sale
The Sacred Dilly Bag was painted in ochre on paper by James Iyuna. James was born in central Arnhemland in 1959. He comes from a family of very famous artists including brothers Jimmy Nimitjuma and John Mowandjal. The Sacred Dilly Bag is one of my favourites because it represents all knowledge and law from the area. This work is 57cm x 75cm on paper.
Mignonette Jamin Mignonette Jamin
Mignonette Jamin was born near Port Keats in the NT. This work is of her traditional country of Majalindy. The top of the painting is all hills while in the foreground are a number of billabongs found in this country. This painting is 45x70cm on canvas and done in natural ochre. She has only been painting for a few years and didn’t begin until her late 60’s and her art is become increasingly well known. She currently resides in Kununurra and paints intermittently.
Lily (Mindindil) Karadada
Lily (Mindindil) Karadada comes from a long line of traditional painters from the Kimberley that generally paint the spirit figure Wandjina in its many guises. She was born in the Prince Regent River area of Western Australia in 1937, but eventually settled in Kalumburu. She has also exhibited in galleries around Australia and the world.

Mick Kubarkku Mick Kubarkku Item not for sale
Mick Kubarkku was born in central Arnhemland in 1925 and is a Kuninjku speaking man of the Duwa moiety. His painting here is a Ngalyod the ‘Rainbow Serpent’. The Rainbow serpent is the creator and this male Serpent is responsible for the geographical formations. Mick and Lofty are recognised as the last of their generation and have exhibited extensively around the world. A book detailing their work is called ‘Rainbow, Sugarbag and Moon: Two artists of the Stone Country. Bardayal Nadjamerrek and Mick Kubarkku, 1995 by M. West.

Bardayal ‘Lofty’ Nadjamerrek Item not for sale
Born in central Arnhemland in1926, Lofty is considered to be and Australian living treasure. He is one of the very last of the true rock painters with some of his rock paintings found in Arnhemland. The paintings here are:
  1. Echidna Dreaming, which is a museum quality painting on bark (45x94cm) that depicts two echidnas and their honey bags from which they extract ants.
  2. is a painting of three water pythons.
Lofty has exhibited in many galleries throughout the world and Australia.

Ivan Namirriki
Ivan Namirriki was born in central Arnhemland in 1960. He paints in natural ochre and over the past few years has changed his style from painting totem animals such as Kangaroo and turtle as shown here, to a more filling style where he paints his country as a series of significant geological formations such as outcrops and waterholes. He is part of the Maningrida artists who are currently making a huge splash on the international stage, mostly led by Lofty and John Mowandjal.

Mitjili Napurrula is a Pintupi woman born in 1945 near Kintore, NT. Her works here depict the trees that provide spears and other wooden objects as part of Tjukurrpa, or dreaming on the woman’s side. Titled Uwalki: Watija Tjuta they are on Belgian linen and measure 122cm x 122cm.

Ningura Napurrula
Ningura Napurrula was born at Watulka, south of Kintore, NT in 1938. She is a Pintupi woman whose painting here is of Water Soakage of Ngaminya and incorporated designs associated with women’s ceremonies at the rock holes and soakage sites of Ngaminya. It is here that the senior women pass down their stories. The roundels represent the rock holes and campsites where the women have gathered, while the surrounds are the rocky hills and outcrops associated with the area.

June Peters was born on Texas Downs Station in 1962 and is a Kitja woman. She has 8 children and lives in Kununurra. Her art is very colourful in ochre and balanced. These works are 60cmx45cm on canvas of Bedford Downs Station and Black Ranges on Whataguttabe Station or Old Lansdowne Station.

Minnie Motorcar Pwerle
Minnie Motorcar Pwerle was born on Utopia station in 1920. Her very colourful art generally depicts designs used in womens ceremonies called awelye. She also paints bush melons and melon seeds, and at times combines the two. MP0633 is 60x150cm on linen and MP 0634 is 120x90cm on linen and were some of the very last works before her death recently (March 06).

Freddie Timms Freddie Timms (Gnarrmaliny)
Freddie Timms (Gnarrmaliny) was born at Police Hole, Bedford Downs in 1944. Freddie has painted with the most famous of Kimberley artists, Rover Thomas and Jack Britten, and influenced many of his contemporaries with his minimalist style. He is currently one of the senior men painting in the Kimberley and his art is on the increase in terms of its collect ability. Mud Springs is Ochre on canvas and is 100cm x 120cm.

Warlimpirrnga Tjapaljarri was born near Kiwirrkura in 1960 and is from the Pintupi tribe. The painting here is 180cm x 120cm on Belgian linen and depicts Tarrku, country to the east of Kiwirrkura in the centre of Pintupi country. This painting is a map and shows the country that Walimpirnga and his brothers, Walala and Thomas Tjapaljarri would travel in search of food. The painting itself is predominantly associated with Tingari, which is essentially secret men’s business, so does not have a translation for a general audience.

Born north of Kiwurrkura, Western Australia in 1940, George Ward Tjungurrayi is a senior Pintupi man. His art generally depicts in a loose fashion the sand dunes and soakages around his country. This country is associated with Tingari, mens business, and does not have a general interpretation other than the physical attributes of the area.

Kenneth Wark was born near the Roper River around 1948. Kens work is most seen around Katherine and is starting to move as more people see his precise rarrk using natural ochres. His work here is of two goannas. Since the arrival of Cane Toads into Katherine, this subject matter may just become a dreaming for Kenny’s children.
Bob West Bob West
Bobby West Tjupurrula was born in the country east of Kiwirrkura called Tjamu Tjamu in 1958. He is Pintupi and the son of Freddie West Tjupurrula, a very well known artist who was part of the original art movement in the 1970’s from the desert country. This painting is Acrylic paint on Belgian linen and is 181cm x 152cm. The painting is the desert country around Lake Gregory. It represents the sand dune country that he and his family would travel. The white patches are the many salt lakes found in that country, while the swirling lines are the soakage from the overflows associated with the large lakes. This area is also associated with Tingari as men would travel this country on their secret ritual business.
Thompson Yulidgerri
Here are three paintings by Thompson Yulidgerri of a blue tongue lizard, burial ceremony and barramundi hunting.
Thompson is recognised as one of the senior men from the west Arnhem region. He originally painted in x-ray style and was a rock painter, but due to the demands and vagaries of the western art market has changed his style to include cross hatched rarrk.

A painting by Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula was born in 1930 near Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia. His art is now starting to take pride of place in many collections around the world. His wife is also a highly regarded artist (Walangkurra Napanangka).

A work by Patrick Olodoodi Tjungurrayi - Was born at Yalangerri in Western Australia in 1943. He is a most collectable artist who is a senior lawman responsible for traditional ceremonies for the country around Balgo and Kiwirrkurra.
